December 1st (partnered with The Town Hall)

1st Henley-on-Thames Girl Guides celebrated their 100th Birthday in December 2014. The group has run continuously for 101 years providing girls with fun, friendship and a space to be themselves. The girls also learn important life skills, such as organisation and leadership. Every year each girl is required to be involved in helping the local community and this year we have chosen to provide help on the opening night of the Henley Living Advent Calendar.

Henley Girl Guides

We will be the partners on the first night at Henley Town Hall where the girls will be providing refreshments that they have made. We are all looking forward to this chance to be involved in this innovative event in the Henley year.

The 1st Henley-on-Thames Guide unit is thriving and we are almost at capacity. The girls are encouraged to be a major part in decisions about what the unit does. Some of our recent activities have included bag decorating, tent pitching, following trails and a picnic in the park. This term we ran 2 TV inspired sessions, “The Great Guide Bake Off” and “I’m a Guide Get Me Out Of Here” The latter involved eating real insects.

We also organise trips for the girls. Each year we run a popular summer camp where the girls help prepare meals and look after themselves and our equipment. This October we attended the Big Gig at Wembley Arena, a special concert staged exclusively for Girlguiding members. In 2014 to celebrate our centenary a group of girls and their leaders travelled to Adelboden, Switzerland. A very special trip and enjoyed by us all.
